First Responders Day, presented by BP America, was held at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Monday to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of first responders. Individuals and groups who have shown bravery in the line of duty were honored at a special ceremony, including law enforcement, firefighters, EMS personnel and volunteer first responders.

“This is a room filled with courage and heroes, and you are such an inspiration,” Dana Tyson, the host of the event and Sunny 99.1 Morning Show Host, said.

The ceremony honored the fallen; with a reading of names in remembrance. Chaplain Wendy Morris opened the ceremony with a heartfelt prayer, asking for strength and protection for those who risk their lives daily for the greater good of the public.

Among the honorees was Houston Police Department’s Major Offenders Division FBI Task Force, recognized for dismantling a major drug trafficking network. Their operation led to multiple federal indictments and the removal of dangerous fentanyl pills from the streets.

Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, 13, was also recognized for his remarkable journey. Battling brain and spine cancer, DJ was recently named an honorary U.S. Secret Service agent by President Donald Trump, earning him a standing ovation from the crowd. His resilience and determination are a true inspiration nationwide.

As the ceremony concluded, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials expressed their gratitude, reiterating the organization’s appreciation for first responders and their dedication to protecting the community.

“First responders are a lot like rodeo volunteers,” said Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo president and CEO, Chris Boleman. “They give their time for a greater purpose, and we are incredibly grateful for their service.”
