How to Apply for a Scholarship

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ scholarship application is completed entirely online. Applicants will upload supplemental documents when completing the online application. Then, a school official or counselor will complete a second portion of the application online.

In order to qualify for a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship, all minimum requirements must be met.

Scholarship Requirements

Applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements in order to be eligible for a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship.

  • Be a U.S. citizen and Texas resident.
  • Graduating high school senior from eligible school
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid available October 2021.
  • Plan to attend an accredited, not-for-profit university in the State of Texas.

SAT and/or ACT scores will be a requirement of the scholarship application in 2024. Be sure to schedule your test dates accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit or change my application or documents after I submit?

No. Once your application has been submitted, there are no edits or changes. Take your time and be thorough when completing the application. Be sure that you are uploading the appropriate documents prior to submitting.

What is FAFSA and how do I file?

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Apply through fafsa.ed.gov. You can file your FAFSA beginning October 1. In order to complete the FAFSA, you may use your tax return from the prior-prior year.

It can take 2-3 weeks for your FAFSA to be processed and your Student Aid Report received. Plan accordingly!

Can I apply for more than one Show Scholarship? How?

Yes, you can apply for every scholarship that you meet eligibility requirements for.

By providing your school information and answering the questions in the application, you will automatically be included in the pool of applicants for each scholarship that you meet eligibility for.

Can I win more than one Show scholarship?

No. Recipients can only receive one Show scholarship.

Do I have to have shown an animal or participated at the Show to apply for a scholarship?

No, with these three exceptions:

  • School Art – applicant must participate in the Show’s school art program
  • Exhibitor – applicant must exhibit in one of the sixteen approved shows
  • Hildebrand – applicant must exhibit a Junior Market Lamb

Do I have to major in Agriculture?

No, there are no restrictions on majors, so long as the student’s major leads to a four-year-degree.

Can I attend a community or junior college?

Yes, the Show funds its scholarship recipients who begin their academic pursuits at community or junior colleges. However, the student must show academic progress and finish at a four-year-institution.

Can I attend a college or university outside of Texas?

No, all recipients must attend a college or university in Texas.

My parents are members of the Show or work on Show committees. Can I apply for a scholarship?

Yes. Children of Show members or Show committee members are eligible to apply but receive no special consideration.

How are scholarship recipients selceted?

Applications are evaluated three times in a blind judging. Evaluators use a comprehensive score sheet with points awarded for academics, leadership, and financial need.

When and how are winners announced?

All students who submit a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship application will be notified, regardless of the decision. 

How does the payment work?

Scholarships are $5,000 per year with the opportunity to renew each year to total $20,000 over four years. Disbursements are made each semester directly to the university and are specified for tuition and fees.
