FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do I need to do to maintain my scholarship?

To remain in good standing and continue receiving your Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship, you must:

  • Stay enrolled and earn full-time credit hours (at least 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester).
  • Maintain the required GPA — a minimum 2.0 during your first year and 2.5 in all following semesters.
  • Submit your grades each semester by the deadline through your Kaleidoscope account.
  • Submit annual financial aid verification by June 30 through Kaleidoscope on your Spring gradebook
  • Keep your contact information updated in Kaleidoscope (address, phone, and email).
  • Write thank-you and progress letters to your donor each semester.

I am in my final semester of classes and will not be full time. Can I receive my scholarship?

At the end of each semester, the Educational Programs Office will send an “end of semester” email and host a webinar. The team will include a “Less Than Full Time” Form in which you can notify the office you will not be full time because you are graduating. Please be on the lookout for this form!

How are my scholarship funds disbursed?

Payments are made directly to your college or university’s Financial Aid Office to cover tuition and fees through a check placed in the mail. No payments are made directly to students. Please allow your school enough time to receive and process the check.

How do I submit my gradebook?

Log onto your Kaleidoscope portal and click on the “Gradebook” tab.

The following information must be visible in a screenshot:

  • Calculated Semester GPA
  • Calculated/Totaled Semester Hours Earned
  • Calculated/Totaled Attempted Hours Earned
  • Calculated Cumulative GPA

What if I fail to submit grades or communicate to the Rodeo Office?

Failure to maintain contact or submit grades for two consecutive semesters results in permanent loss of your scholarship.

Can I study abroad or do an internship and still receive my scholarship funds?

Yes, if it’s approved and sponsored by your Texas university. Summer study abroad programs are not eligible.

  • If the program is not approved, you may be eligible to put your funds on hold for the semester.
  • Scholars should be aware that grades from study abroad programs are often delayed. Scholarship disbursements will not be made until grades have been received and verified on a transcript from the student’s home university.

What if I need to transfer schools?

Submit a Transfer Request in Kaleidoscope by the given deadline (communicated through [email protected]). You will need your new student ID to submit the request!

What happens if I don’t meet GPA or semester hour requirements?

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo operates on a three-strike disciplinary system. Scholars may appeal probation or forfeiture by requesting an appeal form from the Office of Educational Programs.

  • Scholars must recognize when their Gradebook will not meet GPA requirements and submit their appeal within the same timeframe that grades are due (by the Gradebook deadline).

Disciplinary steps are as follows:

  1. First offense: Written warning and one-time Waiver. Funding for the next semester will still be made.
  2. Second offense: Probation — no payment will be made for that semester, and no back payment will be issued.
  3. Third offense: Forfeiture — the scholarship is revoked, and all remaining funds revert to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund.

What if I have a special situation in which I may need to take time off or I am unable to maintain a full time status as a student?

You may request a Hold or Medical Waiver for up to one year. Email the Office of Educational Programs for approval.

What if I have leftover funds?

  • Scholars may apply for a double payment in their FINAL TWO semesters with proof of a corresponding graduation date through their Kaleidoscope portal.
  • Scholars graduating with leftover funds may use them for an eligible Texas graduate program or a student loan within one year, with the exception of Achievement funds – these may not be applied post graduation.

Do I need to contact my scholarship donor?

Please send a progress letter/thank you card by the posted deadline each semester.
