The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo awarded seven Houston-area technical colleges and institutions more than $200,000 in vocational scholarships for the 2018–2019 academic year.

The Rodeo’s Vocational Scholarship Awards program selects local technical schools to receive funds based on the type and cost of technical programs offered, allowing them to award students with vocational scholarships. This year’s recipients include Houston Community College, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lee College, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College, Texas State Technical College and Wharton County Junior College.

“There is a definite need for skilled labor within the current economy, and the Rodeo is committed to supporting those students who have the desire to fill this need,” said Joel Cowley, Rodeo president and CEO. “Each of our technical school partners is focused on providing quality vocational education and training programs, and we are proud to invest in their mission to give students access to educational opportunities that will provide for a better future.”

Since the program’s inception in 2015, the Rodeo has awarded 207 scholarships totaling $801,000.

These scholarships represent a portion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment of more than $26 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, School Art participants and other educational programs.
