City of Houston Mayor John Whitmire joins “Mission Rodeo” to reflect on the groundbreaking of The Farm and what the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s new agricultural complex could mean for the city and its residents.
The conversation looks back at the historic groundbreaking along Highway 288 and explores how the project will expand opportunities in agriculture, education and youth development while creating a year-round destination for the community. The Farm represents the largest single facilities investment in Rodeo history and is expected to open in 2029.
Whitmire’s Texas roots run deep. Growing up in rural Texas without consistent access to running water, he experienced firsthand the demands of country life, an upbringing he says helped shape his work ethic, sense of responsibility and commitment to serving others.
He further discusses the importance of projects that strengthen Houston’s quality of life and create opportunities for future generations.
“It fires me up, because it’s a demonstration of this city moving in the right direction…getting stronger every day. Ya’ll are doing it the right way, and that’s why I’m not going anywhere,” Whitmire said.
The episode also explores the Rodeo’s long-standing connection to Houston and the role The Farm will play in expanding agricultural education and community engagement beyond the annual Show.
“My challenge is to improve the quality of life inside the City of Houston. For the people who would like to live closer to where they work this is it…and to see the Rodeo understand the commitment historically to Houston, they got their start right in downtown and still decide to stay in the city…and not depend on the public taxpayer dollars. I’ve been a public servant, elected official my whole adult life, so I understand the model of going to government for public assistance…and here to say we are going to break ground on our own, that is a strong message,” said Whitmire.
