The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ Youth Cavy and Breeding Rabbit Show provides exhibitors with the opportunity to showcase the hard work and care they have invested in their projects in preparation for the show ring.

Exhibitors also can participate in the Youth Rabbit Judging Contest. This contest requires contestants to take a written judging examination, which tests their knowledge of rabbit breed specifics such as varieties, weight, and color. In addition to taking a written judging examination, the senior contestants are challenged with placing a class of live rabbits.

Kellie Tondre, a breeding rabbit exhibitor from La Coste, Texas, has been competing in the judging contest for 12 years.

“In the next two years I plan to apply for my rabbit judging license,” Tondre said. “This contest has given me the experience to reach that goal.”

According to Tondre, participating in the judging contest has helped her learn how to recognize and evaluate a variety of rabbit breeds.

“I plan to use my knowledge to inspire other youth to keep this hobby alive,” she said.
