The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Ranching & Wildlife Auction sold adventures to raise scholarship money for Texas youth, Friday, March 2.

Ranging from quail hunts and fishing trips to an African safari, the 16 packages sold during the auction were ideal for nature enthusiasts.

Donors contribute these packages and auction attendees generously pay thousands of dollars for them, making this a double victory for the fundraiser.

Out of the thousands raised at the auction, $23,000 was raised from the Promontory Park City package, which includes a stay at a stunning resort-style community and was the highest sale at the auction.

Though the Ranching & Wildlife Committee is very successful now, it had humble beginnings. Glenn Lilie, one of the founders, said this committee was developed because the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo needed another exhibit on the lineup.

“This ‘space filler’ turned out to be a great thing for the youth and the Rodeo,” Lilie said.

The committee’s largest selling point is its uniqueness, said Mary Meuth, a vice chairman who focuses on education.

“This committee gives students an opportunity to pursue more wildlife interests as opposed to livestock,” she said.
