On any other day of the week, ranch horses run a tight schedule. From penning cattle to roping calves to transporting their riders safely from one job to the next, they rarely have time to concern themselves with trophies.

On March 5 – 6, however, these hardworking horses took a few days off from their ordinary duties and gussied up to enter the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ Ranch Horse Competition.

This competition provides horse and rider the opportunity to bring their everyday working skills to the arena.

The Ranch Horse Competition consists of Ranch Rail Pleasure, Ranch Riding, Ranch Reining, Ranch Trail and Ranch Confirmation.

The Ranch Rail Pleasure, Ranch Riding, Ranch Reining and Ranch Trail competitions require horse and rider to complete a pattern, and also a variety of circles, spins and stops, which display how well they work together as a team.

The Ranch Confirmation competition evaluates a horse’s structure, balance and performance as a working ranch horse.
