The Ranching & Wildlife Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo hosted its Ranching & Wildlife Video Competition on Saturday, where 4-H and FFA youth showcased their knowledge of agriculture, conservation and wildlife management through creative video presentations.
“This competition gives students the opportunity to research topics they’re passionate about, from ranching to wildlife and the environment — and share what they’ve learned,” said Amy Reynolds, vice chairman for education for the Ranching & Wildlife Committee. “It’s exciting for us to see the work they’ve done and the knowledge they’re bringing to support our environment and natural resources.”
The Ranching & Wildlife competitions challenge 4-H and FFA youth to explore topics related to Texas ranching, wildlife management and conservation. Through storytelling, research and visual media, video contestants create short films highlighting practices that support responsible sustainability and conservation in agriculture.
Students competing in the poster board division present their research through visual displays and defend their findings to the judges in a question-and-answer setting, demonstrating knowledge of their topic.
For many contestants, the experience is about more than just the competition.
“The community is kind of like a shoelace,” said Avha Noor of the Brenham FFA chapter. “We all grow up here and share similar experiences, so being part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo feels like being part of a big family.”
Lindy Wrinkle of Callahan County 4-H took home first place in the video competition for her project highlighting the role alligators play in Texas.
Ten finalists from across the state advanced to the final round of the Ranching & Wildlife competitions. They were judged and awarded at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
