The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo completed its Junior Breeding Beef Heifer Show: British and Continental Champion Drive on Saturday, March 15.

Judge Curtis Doubet evaluated the British heifer breeds, selecting top entries from Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Shorthorn. Meanwhile, Judge Scott Greiner oversaw the Continental division, judging breeds such as Charolais, Chianina, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Simmental, and other registered breeds.

Supreme Champion British Division was exhibited by Aidyn Barber, 18, from Channing, Texas. She said preparing for this caliber of a stock show takes months of dedication. Winning the title was an unforgettable and surreal moment for her.

“It’s not just a week before the show; you go out there and start working them,” Barber said. “It’s an everyday-for-months type of thing for a year.”

Barber plans to attend Texas Tech University, where she will double major in animal science and agribusiness with a focus in communications. She then plans to pursue a master’s degree in agriculture law.

Kennadi Brogdon, 14, from Waxahachie, Texas, earned the Supreme Champion title in the Continental Division. Brogdon worked with her heifer for a year. She described winning the title as an exciting moment. This victory will help showcase her family’s name and reputation in the industry.

“People don’t realize how much work it takes,” Brogdon said. “It helps us represent our name and get it out there.”

16- year-old Wesley Phillips, from Stanton, Texas, won Reserve Supreme Champion British Division. Phillips prepared for the show by working as much as possible with his heifer. Competing at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a family affair.

“All three of my sisters showed their cattle here,” Phillips said. “It takes a lot of time and effort.”

Maddison Moseley, 16, from Brownwood, Texas, secured the Reserve Supreme Champion title in the Continental Division at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She credits her livestock-showing experience with helping her build friendships and develop strong leadership skills.

“Nobody realizes the connections. How many connections can you make?” Moseley said. “It was such a goal of mine [to win] – I don’t even know how to describe it.”
