Judges selected the champion broilers and turkeys on Friday at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Junior Market Poultry Show in NRG Arena.
Bree Dooley, a 15-year-old from Fayette County 4-H, claimed the Grand Champion title in the Junior Market Broiler Show. Dooley said she has been showing broilers for eight years and credited her family for helping her reach the milestone.
“It means so much — the world, everything,” Dooley said about winning the title.
Garrett Carr of Lake Creek FFA earned Grand Champion honors in the Junior Market Turkey Show. Carr, who is from Montgomery, Texas, said he plans to attend Texas A&M University and hopes one day to run the family business. He said the title reflects months of hard work and dedication.
Dustin Morgenroth judged the hens in the turkey division, while Kyle Morgenroth evaluated the toms. In the broiler division, Jacob Leopold judged the pullets, and Jason Mooney evaluated the cockerels.
Leopold, a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in poultry science, works for an agricultural company that supplies feed additives.
“This is the biggest and best poultry show in the United States and the world,” Leopold said. “It’s great to give back to the youth.”
The champions will return to NRG Arena on Saturday, March 14, for the Junior Market Poultry Auction, which begins at 11 a.m.
