Grand and Reserve Champion British and Continental Breeding Beef Heifers were selected Saturday at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the main arena of NRG Center. The Grand and Reserve champions from each division advanced to compete in the Supreme Champion Drive for overall honors.

Tim Schaeffer of Hagerstown, Indiana, judged the Junior Breeding Beef Heifer Show for the British breeds. British breed categories include Hereford, Angus, Polled Hereford, Red Angus and Shorthorn.

“Young people, this is for you,” Schaeffer said. “Every person has a support system that made this possible. Those are some of the most important people in your life — the ones who love, support and drive you. I wouldn’t be where I am without those people.”

William Coor of Greenfield, Ohio, judged the Continental breeds, which include Charolais, Maine-Anjou, ORB, Simmental, Limousin and Chianina.

“I don’t care where you start — that does not define you,” Coor told the young exhibitors. “What defines you is where you end up.”

Landry Allen of Prairie Valley FFA earned the Grand Champion title in the Junior British Breeding Beef Heifer division. Allen said the achievement meant a great deal to him and his family after months of preparation.

“It took a lot of preparation to get to this point,” Allen said. “There were tons of late nights in the barn.”

Paislee King, 13, claimed the Grand Champion title in the Junior Continental Breeding Beef Heifer division after four years of showing at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“It means a lot because it took a long time to get here, and it’s exciting,” King said. “I wasn’t expecting that to happen.”
