The RODEOHOUSTON Super Series is a 20-day tournament-style competition that crowns an event champion in bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and women’s barrel racing and breakaway roping.  With a total payout of $2,533,500, each champion is awarded $65,000, plus previous round winnings, a custom-made saddle and belt buckle, and an invitation to compete at RODEOHOUSTON the following year.

RODEOHOUSTON is an official PRCA NFR money event, with earnings from RODEOHOUSTON counting toward qualification for the NFR and the PRCA World Standings.

HOW IT WORKS

RODEOHOUSTON is organized into five three-day Super Series, two Semifinal rounds, two Wild Card rounds and a Championship round. Each series includes three rounds, with one round being performed each day. There are eight contestants in each of the eight rodeo events during the series. Each series advances the top four money winners in each event to one of the two Semifinal rounds, where 10 athletes compete in each event. Both Semifinal rounds send the top four athletes in each event to the Championship, while the remaining six move to one of the two Wild Card rounds for a second chance at earning a spot in the Championship. From both Wild Card rounds, the top one athlete in each event advances to the Championship.

The Championship includes all 10 athletes competing in each event. The top four advance and immediately ride again in the Championship Shootout Round to determine the event champion and the $65,000 payout.

RODEO IS NOT AN INDIVIDUAL SPORT

Honoring the skills of the American cowboy, the sport of rodeo is just as much about livestock as it is cowboys and cowgirls — each are athletes in their own right. To ensure the safety and well-being of all athletes competing, RODEOHOUSTON provides on-site medical care for both livestock and contestants. RODEOHOUSTON also follows strict protocol regarding the equipment contestants are allowed to use in the arena.

Audiences raise the most questions about the equipment used during rough stock events — flank straps and spurs. These “tools of the trade” are used during bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding to enhance the livestock’s bucking action. The flank strap is a sheepskin-lined strip of leather placed on the flank of the horse or bull, which is located behind the animal’s rib cage. RODEOHOUSTON strictly regulates the use of the strap, which must have a quick-release buckle without any sharp objects. Dull spurs also are utilized in rough stock and speed events. RODEOHOUSTON regulations mandate that spurs have blunt rowels (the star-shaped wheel located on the spur) that are approximately one-eighth of an inch thick and, therefore, cannot cut or harm the livestock. Competitors using non-regulation spurs will be disqualified.

As with any sport, there is always a chance of injury. To ensure all livestock are treated with appropriate care, a licensed veterinarian remains near the RODEOHOUSTON arena at all times during the 20 rodeo performances.

RODEOHOUSTON brings superstar rodeo athletes to thousands of fans every night. The Fan Zone offers an opportunity for fans of all ages to meet the real cowboys and cowgirls who bring this larger-than-life sport to Houston every spring.

Take home a piece of RODEOHOUSTON with an autographed back number replica from all-star athletes. A Rodeo ticket is required for entry into NRG Stadium, and the Fan Zones are located on the main concourse in sections 103 & 124.
