JCS Contest
Rule Updates

We are very excited for the upcoming 2023 Junior Commercial Steer Feeding and Management Contest. As some of you recall from the 2022 Awards Reception, we have some changes coming in 2023. A full preliminary rules document will follow with our Handbook posted in the fall as normal. Below is a list of the major changes.

  1. 30 days are being added to the feeding period
    1. Intent Form will open July 18, 2022, at 9 a.m.
    2. Steers will need to be purchased on or before Aug. 31, 2022
    3. Scale tickets will be due Sept. 15, 2022

  2. Sale weights are being adjusted up 100 lbs. on both ends
    1. Minimum weight will be 1,150 lbs.
    2. Maximum weight will be 1,650 lbs.

  3. Steer points for select grading cattle are being adjusted.
    1. USDA Select Yield Grades 1, 2 or 3 will receive 1 point
      1. Previously Select Yield Grade 1 or 2 received 3 points
      2. Previously Select Yield Grade 3 received 2 points
    2. All other grade points will remain unchanged

  4. Steer Sales Premiums are being removed for all cattle grading select or below
    1. Choice and Prime Cattle in the auction will still receive up to 20 cents per pound above the market price with a minimum $200
The $140 premium for Select steers and the $80 premium for steers grading below Select, ungraded or steers outside the weight limits are being eliminated

We hope that these changes will more accurately reflect our current commercial cattle market and bring a more marketable product to the contest and our buyers.
