2021 Industrial Craft Competition
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ Names 2021 Industrial Craft Competition Winners

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo recognized award winners of the 2021 Industrial Craft Competition, held as a private event Saturday, May 8 at NRG Center. The competition helps to foster the development of industrial craft skills for students who are enrolled in career and technical education programs from 10-Gulf Coast-area school districts.

Teams constructed a spec-built project that was judged by industry experts. Each team was required to deliver a brief presentation to the judges, preceded by a detailed inspection of the project.

2021 Industrial Craft Competition Award Winners:

Built to Specification: This award evaluates how the project was built, according to the drawings presented to the students by the Industrial Craft Competition Committee.

  • Winner: Clear Creek High School

Project Execution: This award evaluates the various components of the project plan, including scope of work, project goal, quality and technical specifications, resource allocation, project schedule, project estimate and related organizational considerations.

  • Winner: Alvin High School

Project Presentation: This award is based on the students’ explanation of the project, including what was learned during the process, as well as their ability to answer questions from the judges.

  • Winner: Alvin High School

Safety: This award is based on the ability to build the project without accident or injury to the participants and by avoiding damage to the equipment or property. Students are evaluated on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and related best practices, as well as their ability to modify the work process, if/when necessary.

  • Winner: Katy High School

Overall Project Champion: This award embodies the four award categories mentioned above: Built to Specification, Project Execution, Project Presentation and Safety. The Overall Project Champion Award is based on a well-worked plan that was completed safely and resulted in a final product that matched the customer specifications.

  • Winner: Clear Creek High School

Each school has been working on the spec-built project since early fall 2020. Industry mentors worked with the high school instructors to provide their expertise and guidance. In addition, the students kept a journal of their progress that covered their roles, the project safety plan, an incident log, the project schedule and any rework that was completed.
