Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Awards $1.4 Million in Scholarships to Texas 4-H Members

Seventy students from the Texas 4-H program will attend college thanks in part to $1.4 million in scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™, presented during the Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station, Texas, Thursday, June 14, 2018.

“Texas 4-H is the largest youth development program in our state, promoting knowledge, leadership and self-confidence through hands-on learning experiences, many of which involve some facet of agriculture,” said Joel Cowley, Show president and CEO. “Because these goals and values directly align with those of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, it is very rewarding to recognize the accomplishments of these talented scholars.”

Of the 70 students receiving a Texas 4-H scholarship, 57 percent are female and 43 percent are male. Students hail from 50 different counties across Texas, and will be attending 19 different Texas colleges and universities. They will major in 32 different fields of study. The top two universities these scholars will attend are Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University, and the top three chosen majors are Animal Science, Agricultural Economics and Engineering.

The scholarship recipients received $20,000 to apply toward a four-year, undergraduate degree for a total scholarship commitment of $1.4 million. Students were selected by Texas 4-H officials based on the students’ involvement with the program, academic achievements and financial need. View the list of scholarship recipients here.

These scholarships represent a portion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment of more than $26 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, School Art participants and other educational programs.
